ACCORDING to IPC Peripherals, Inc., Internet users can now talk to anyone in the world for the price of a local phone call using CyberChat, a new sound card developed by the Fremont, Calif. company. The new card is a full duplex audio communication tool, the company reports. This means that it can allow two parties to speak naturally as if they were talking on a telephone. Most sound cards, the company notes, are half duplex, which means they can perform only one function at a time--talk or listen.
CyberChat includes a 16-bit full duplex, stereo sound card, a headset with a built-in speaker, and a microphone. It also includes software and registration code to allow for the installation of VocalTec's Internet Phone software. The hardware/software combination digitizes voice signals into data packets and then sends them across the Internet.
