SWAPCRYPT, a PCMCIA encryption card, is claimed to offer the best possible level of security available today. When used properly, according to SCM Microsystems of Los Gatos, Calif., the card provides a total barrier to unauthorized entry. The card secures data using a new patent-pending technique that utilizes the unbreakable One Time Pad encryption technique. SwapCrypt encrypts the original file to a temporary file; permanently wipes out the original file; and then renames the temporary file with the name of the deleted file. The original data is overwritten three times, in compliance with U.S. government security standards. SwapCrypt also protects data by using five-character passwords for each different data file or directory encrypted.
SwapCrypt includes a Type I PCMCIA encryption card and a floppy disk for initialization of the encryption key and backup. Because each encryption key is uniquely generated, the company explains, the backup floppy is essential to access the secured data in the event that the encryption card is lost or becomes damaged.
