VITALS: Harvard College '78. Stanford Law School '81.
CURRENT POST: Senior Director, worldwide legal services, Cisco Systems, Inc. (Cisco manufactures computer networking equipment.) I manage a team of 95 lawyers and contract negotiators in 16 countries. We are responsible for closing sales and support transactions for Cisco products, managing the legal department's administrative services, litigation and the company's export control function.
PRO BONO: I've been active in my city (Palo Alto). I've served as chair of the planning committee, in the '80s; and on the utilities commission, in the '90s (fortunately before any of the deregulation activities).
OFFICE TECHNOLOGY: Cisco has aggressively pursued automation of virtually all corporate functions, using Web-based technology. Our equipment is very straightforward Toshiba and IBM laptops, Windows 95/2000, and Microsoft Office.
PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY: I use a Toshiba Portege 7020 laptop and a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4000.
FAVORITE GADGET: Fuji 4700 digital camera.
HOME SYSTEM: Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 8580.
HOME ISP: Rhythms DSL.
PAGER: Blackberry RIM 950.
PDA: Palm Vx.
FAVORITE PDA SOFTWARE: I just use what came with it. I have never downloaded anything.
FAVORITE COMPUTER GAME: I have never found anything more fun than Tetris.
CELL PHONE: Nokia 8000 series. (I'm waiting for Palm operating system on cellphones).
WATCH: Concord.
FAVORITE NON-TECH MAGAZINES: Brill's Content, Economist, New Yorker.
CARS: '98 Volvo V70 wagon, '99 Honda Odyssey.
LENO OR LETTERMAN? I have never seen either one. I don't even know how to pronounce Leno. I don't watch much T.V. I've seen maybe three. football games, with my son, in the last four months.
LAST BOOKS READ: Guns, Germs and Steel, by Jared Diamond. Storyville, by Dale Peterson.
WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: At the beach; or throwing or kicking a ball with one of my three children.
APPOINTMENT YOU NEVER MISS? I try to make my dentist appointments but I missed the last one.
MOST IMPORTANT LEGAL TECH TREND? Law firm Extranet sites, which will change the profession from the model of medieval guilds to application service providers.
MOST IMPORTANT TECH ACCOMPLISHMENT IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS: Implementation of automated contract management at Cisco.
