West Awards Scholarships

West Group has named four recipients of the $2,500 West group Excellence in Law Librarianship scholarship. They are Melanie Harshman, Univ. of Texas at Austin Library School; Merrill Chertok, Univ. of Wisconsin Library School; Donna Nixon, Univ. of North Carolina Library School; and Elizabeth Kenney, Suffolk Univ. Law School.

The program is designed to promote law librarians' educational needs, leadership and excellence within the profession. Scholarships are awarded to individuals working toward a graduate level library science, law or computer science degree.

Dis-Engaged

Corel Corp. and Inprise/Borland Corp. have called off their merger agreement, the companies report. The reciprocal stock option agreements have also been terminated.

In anticipation of the merger agreement, Corel and Inprise/Borland entered into a confidentiality agreement that included a standard three-year standstill covenant. That agreement remains in effect. The companies, says Corel, are parting amicably and plan to continue to pursue other opportunities.

After the announcement of the collapse of the merger, Corel announced that it is reducing its workforce as a cost reduction measure, part of its efforts to reduce costs by approximately $40 million on an annualized basis. Approximately 320 positions were cut (21 percent), and the downsizing impacted all departments, reported Michael Cowpland, president and CEO. Cowpland also announced that he has "voluntarily opted to forego his salary at this time."

Corel manufactures WordPerfect software, among its product line. Earlier this Spring, it announced an agreement with Linux Technology Ltd to bring its Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux to an Internet appliance platforms.

Alliances

MTI Technology Corp. and VERITAS Software Corp. have formed an alliance to conduct cross-certification testing. They also announced that the RAID component of MTI's Vivant enterprise storage system is certified on VERITAS Cluster Server and VERITAS Foundation Suite.

Insurance Services Office Inc. and West Group have formed an alliance to distribute selected ISO publications via Westlaw, West Group's online legal and business research service. The first ISO publication to appear on Westlaw will be ISO's State Filing Handbook, a source of state insurance laws and regulations governing requirements for filing rates, rules and policy forms with state regulators.

VirPak.com and Decade Systems Corp. have formed an alliance that will combine VirPak's online technology with Decade's data integration system. This is designed to allow for the sharing of information, such as documents, images and any other electronic files that support business transactions.

New Organizations

ProBATE Software has announced the formation of NATEP, the National Alliance of Trust and Estate Professionals. The alliance is open to provide CPAs, attorneys, and other estate and trust professionals.With weekly electronic communiques, NATEP offers articles designed to both educate and provide practical software suggestions necessary to apply the new techniques in the members' practices. It also plans to provide a Web site with discussion groups where members can share information with colleagues, receive technical support from ProBATE personnel, get current information on estate and trust topics, find links to pertinent Web sites, and learn about upcoming conferences. Additional benefits include a referral program and an online catalog for purchasing NATEP merchandise.

Awards & Accolades

Martindale-Hubbell's Lawyers.com, a Web site that offers consumers legal information and a searchable database of 420,000 lawyers and law firms, was selected as the "Forbes Favorite" Web site for legal information in the May 22, 2000 issue of Forbes.com, a special issue of Forbes magazine.The quarterly report covers more than 90 categories, and chooses sites based on five criteria for judging: design, navigation, content, speed, and customization. Bonus points were awarded to sites with special "bells and whistles" that make the sites easier and more fun to use.

Integrations

Prairielaw.com has formed a partnership with AskMe.com to integrate the AskMe Network Q&A service into the Prairielaw.com site.

Visitors can access more than 790 legal experts offering personalized responses in more than 2,000 categories, ranging from immigration and business to law enforcement and legal careers, note the companies.

Prairielaw.com offers news articles, message boards, live chat on topical legal issues, it says.

Change of Address

Due to a new postal regulation, a slight change has occurred to LawNet's mailing address: LawNet, 2110 Slaughter Lane, #115, PMB 149, Austin, Texas 78748.

New Names

SCANTECH, the event for automatic data capture, has been renamed Frontline Solutions Expo, reflecting the expansion of the technologies and education that are being presented at this annual event.

Originally a scanning and bar code technology meeting, it has evolved to include mobile computing, wireless communication, RFID, and application software, it says.

RPL has changed its name to Interplx Technologies. Started as an e-mail service for expense report automation, Interplx has grown to an outsourcing company providing corporations with scanning, imaging and auditing services.

In addition to its e-mail service, Interplx has an interactive phone reporting system and recently added ExpenseNet, a Web-based system.

Managers receive a digital report for approval and the data received is correlated with scanned receipts.
