IBM: Red Hat has agreed to license and distribute IBM's Java Runtime Engine, Java Virtual Machine and the IBM Developer Kit for Linux, Java Technology Edition. The IBM software will be bundled with the Red Hat Linux Operating Systems Enterprise Edition.

HP: Hewlett-Packard Co. has selected Sunnyvale, Calif.'s VA Linux Systems Inc. to develop and test HP LaserJet printer support under both Linux and Samba. VA will manage and support this software as an open-source project on its SourceForge, an application service provider for open-source developers.

VA Linux Systems Inc. also has teamed up with technical information provider O'Reilly & Associates to produce the Journal of Linux Technology, a quarterly magazine for Linux developers.
