Opponents Form Vinson & Dimitrius

Five years after standing on opposing sides in the O.J. Simpson criminal trial, Dr. Donald Vinson and Dr. Jo-Ellan Dimitrius have come together to form Vinson & Dimitrius, a trial consulting firm based in Los Angeles.

It will offer trial consulting and jury research, graphics production, witness communications consulting, and other trial-related services.

Alliances

Ringtail Solutions has formed an alliance with CACI, a technology company serving industry and government.

CACI will market Ringtail as a core litigation support and knowledge management product for government and commercial clients whose needs are not being met by traditional client server-based legal products, the companies report.

LawCommerce.com and Ernst & Young L.L.P. have formed an alliance to provide a suite of Web-based services, and technology and business products to lawyers and legal professionals. The technology will be custom-tailored for the business and practice of law, and will be included in an online center for communication and collaboration that will be part of the LawCommerce.com e-marketplace.

The companies will develop and market Web-based research tools, online deal and case collaboration, online training and continuing legal education products. Ernst & Young legal advisory and tax products and services are also planned to be incorporated into the LawCommerce.com e-marketplace.

West Group plans to plug into WorldCom's nationwide Enterprise Digital Subscriber Line service as it introduces its new WestWorks practice management suite for law firms. WestWorks plans a pilot project in Miami, Houston and San Francisco this fall. Using the program, firms will be able to link to a variety of WestWorks services, including client-data entry, time and billing, case and document management, filing, and docketing and calendaring.

ScienceDirect, which offers a full-text scientific database providing access to scientific, technical and medical journals, and Swets Blackwell, a subscription agent, have agreed to establish a link between ScienceDirect and SwetsnetNavigator for universities participating in the U.K.'s National Electronic Site Licence Initiative.

Users of SwetsnetNavigator will be able to link from tables of content, abstracts and search results in Swetsnet-Navigator to the journal articles in ScienceDirect.

The Public Broadcasting Service's PBS Adult Learning Service has signed an agreement with Lawline to distribute Lawline's legal talk-show programs to educational institutions, libraries and adult learning centers nationwide via satellite.

Sacramento-based Examen Inc.., which offers the ExtraLaw service, and T-Lex Inc., of Brookline, Mass., which creates custom Extranet applications, will integrate their respective services. Examen targets case management between and among corporations, in-house lawyers and outside counsel.

Financing

Fios, a provider of electronic evidence discovery services, has secured $3 million in its first round of financing to expand its technology, consulting, and sales operations. Fios provides consulting and information-processing services to law firms and corporate legal departments, helping litigators identify, capture, and use electronic evidence in the lawsuit discovery process. Investors include Digital Partners; FBR CoMotion Venture Capital; Integrity Partners; and others.

USLaw.com, an Internet provider of legal information and tools for consumers and small businesses, has raised $10 million to launch the company's Law Affiliate Network, it reports. Funding was provided in part by UBS Capital Americas L.L.C., Grand Central Holdings and Chazen Capital Partners.

The Law Affiliate Network will provide consumers and small businesses with access to a network of attorneys.
